The Tib Bar
and Slant Board.
What They Do.

Two pieces of kit come up constantly in knees-over-toes training: the tib bar and the slant board. Neither is magic, and neither is mandatory. But used properly they solve two specific problems — shin capacity and knee range — faster than anything else in a home setup. Here's what each one does, when to buy, and how to program them.

The Tib Bar: Loading the Shin

A tib bar is a short bar with a padded foot cradle at one end and a weight sleeve at the other. You sit on a bench, hook your feet under the cradle, and pull your toes up against the load. That's it — it exists to do one job: load dorsiflexion for the tibialis anterior.

That one job matters more than it sounds. The tibialis decelerates your foot on every step and controls the shin under load. When it can't keep up, the knee, the calf and the arch absorb the difference — which is where shin splints, jumper's knee and runner's knee usually come from.

You don't need one to start. Wall tib raises build a lot of capacity for free. The tib bar earns its place when 3 sets of 25 bodyweight reps stop producing a burn and you need real load to keep progressing.

The Slant Board: Buying Range You Don't Have Yet

A slant board elevates your heels on a fixed wedge, usually somewhere between 15 and 35 degrees. Raising the heel lets the knee travel further forward while your torso stays upright, so you can access deep, knee-over-toes positions before your ankles are mobile enough to get there flat-footed.

In practice that means squats you can actually sit into, split squats with a real stretch on the front leg, and calf and Achilles work through a longer range. As ankle mobility improves you reduce the angle — the board is a temporary bridge, not a permanent crutch.

A 25–30 degree board suits most people. Adjustable models are worth the extra money because you can step the angle down over months instead of buying a second board.

How the Two Work Together

The tib bar builds the muscle that protects the knee. The slant board gives you the range in which to train it. Used together they cover both halves of joint resilience — capacity and range — which is exactly the pairing ATG-style programming leans on.

  • Tib bar — strength at the front of the shin, control of the tibia, protection for the knee on landing.
  • Slant board — deeper knee flexion, longer calf and Achilles range, better positions in squats and split squats.

Programming Both Into a Week

A simple, sustainable layout for someone training three to four times a week:

  • Tib bar: 3 sets of 15–20 reps, three sessions per week, always before lower-body work as a primer.
  • Slant board squats: 3 sets of 8–12, two sessions per week, controlled tempo, full depth with a tall torso.
  • Slant board calf raises: 3 sets of 15–20, two sessions per week, full stretch at the bottom.
  • Deload the angle: every 6–8 weeks, drop the board a step and see whether your ankles have caught up.

What You Can Use Instead

Nothing here is a prerequisite for starting. Substitutes that work:

  • No tib bar? Wall tib raises, band dorsiflexion, and weighted heel walks with dumbbells.
  • No slant board? A pair of small plates, a sturdy book wedge, or a rolled mat under the heels.
  • Neither? Backwards walking and full-range split squats still move the needle on knee resilience.
